Hello and Welcome to GUSSC!
Going downhill since 1965, the Glasgow University Ski & Snowboard Club has grown, developed and expanded to become the biggest club on campus, and one of the biggest in Scotland (Edin..who?). Each year we get a little bit bigger and a little bit better and our committee of 10 individually appointed students specialise in areas such as Ski Racing, Social Events and the biggest event on the GUSSC calendar, the Christmas Trip.
Here’s a brief run down of the areas in which you can get involved in GUSSC and where to find more information!
Beginners and Newbies:
Probably the most accessible sports club in Glasgow, you don’t need to have ever put a pair of actual skis on your feet, or strapped into an actual board to be a part of GUSSC. We offer blocks of lessons in Semester 1 & 2 as well as a Taster Session at the start of the year that everyone who has an interest in giving snowsports a go is encouraged to come along to.
We run a whole host of Trips as a club, which are open to all of our members, including rekkies to Scottish resorts, trips to competitions, and the Big Event, the GUSSC Christmas Trip! Running in the last week of December, our trip will be in an Alpine location, which will be announced at the infamous Cheese & Wine event in October. Last year we took around 600 people to Val Thorens in France for a week of madness, snow, pal-making and pretty (un)forgettable Apres.
Last year, over 40% of our new members had never skied, and almost all of them had no intention of learning. And so they shouldn’t! GUSSC has an absolutely packed Social Calendar with Pub Golf, Subcrawls, Bar Meets and thanks to our lovely sponsors at the Record Factory, Viper and Sanctuary, plenty excuses to have lots of fun.
Yes, we do actually do some skiing sometimes. And we’re pretty bloody good at it. You can be a part of our competitive team as we kick the year off with Trials and Training. With Scottish and British competitions such as The Dryslope Championships in Edinburgh, the Indoor series, and competitions in the Alps there’s loads of opportunities to compete for your uni. Time to Boast.. Glasgow came 1st on our home turf last year in the Scottish University Dryslope Championships at Bearsden, and 2nd at the British Dryslopes at Hillend. We also boast some of the best Ski Racers in the country and our Freestyle team is going from strength to strength.
There is so much to get involved in with GUSSC, so many opportunities to meet new like-minded snow-lovers and something for everyone and you can be a member for just £20, so stay tuned, get involved, and I look forward to meeting you!
